Love it! I didn’t know a ‘60s style pickups could do metal this well. It must be the amp that really metals it up!

I played trombone for 15 years, but I've basically never played a string instrument in my life. We're talking zero experience with guitars and their equipment here. I'm looking to get a cheap entry-level guitar and amp to just play around and noodle with at home and try to learn some easy stuff. (Also one that will look nice on a stand in my living room). After much UA-cam research on yours and many other channels, I've basically decided that this is the guitar that I want. Something about the SG sound just does it for me. Not to mention that dark red satin finish just looks great on the SG. Since I'm literally starting with nothing, I just want a simple combo amp to pair it with. I was considering maybe either the Fender Mustang LT25 for $160 or the Fender Champion 20 for $130. I know zero about either of them other than the attractive low prices. I kinda want something that can give me a sound similar to yours in your "Fake Joe Walsh" riffs you've done on this guitar. Any suggestions/advice you might be willing to share would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for all these in-depth videos on this guitar!

Great review, I own both and have gig with them. The biggest difference to me is in the neck. The thicker neck of the Gibson is more comfortable over a long gig than the thin neck of the Epiphone. I also had to work on the frets of the epi But did not have to with the Gibson, due to the plec. That said once the Epiphone was properly set up it plays very nice. If the tributes were still available from Gibson, I would get another one.

the custom shops are usually more sparkly tonally, and well... cooler.

I prefer the sound of the Custom Shop over the Gibson USA in this demo. It cut through the mix better and sounded more balanced. That might be due to a more mid-heavy (or less scooped) audio response. I was surprised that both guiitars have unpotted pickups. AlNiCo 3 vs AlNiCo5 also makes a difference.

I think the 1959 Epiphone with the official Les Paul headstock they recently released was intended to replace the Tribute. It’s at the same price point and forces people to pay more for the Gibson name.

I have the 2003 Copper-top Les Paul Classic. It’s been my main guitar for concerts, studio, teaching, recording, and composing for 20 years. It’s a solid tool!

I had that happen to me I bought a guitar and their owner before me overtightened everything and ruined the tailpiece on the Floyd Rose special

Cool comparison, since the pickups are the same in both. The only differences will be due to the guitar, including the location of the pickups.

First off I’m a blues player and I’m left-handed and I have a hard time finding Guitars that I like I bought a Kramer it said in the description on all websites that had Alco pick ups so when I opened it up there ceramic ceramic are way too Bitey for blues

In 1980 B.B. King requested Gibson not add the F holes to his signature ES-345 (ES-335, variant) to reduce feedback. with Dirty Fingers or Dirty Fingers+ would be the best humbuckers gibson has for metal imo.

I have an Iommi Special w/ a big chunky neck, but not a SG Junior unfortunately. Listening to the comparison here, I can hear the fundamental of the Junior more clearly than the Special…the immediacy of the attack. Seems to have more clear note separation too. I love my Iommi but would love to grab an SG Junior someday when they go back into production (which I’m sure they inevitably will). Thanks for the a/b, great playing as usual!

The Standard sounds more clearer, crystalline and chimey like a Strat, and the more expensive "61 sounds fat and muddy.

I have both guitars, and I feel right at home with each. Recently, I purchased an Ebony Les Paul Junior, and that has become my main guitar. However, before that, I was going back and forth between the two SGs. Love them. Thanks for sharing!

I absolutely love neck profile and sound of SG Standard. But when it comes to color and pickguard I prefer '61. Very very difficult choice.

61 is my next guitar.

I’m on the hunt for an SG Junior but now people on Reverb are selling at over inflated prices. It’s been ridiculous. But also getting a Special but I find the neck pickup can get in my way when picking.

Yeah, today I play my Harley Benton SG Junior left-handed it came with Alnico five magnets. I changed them to twos didn’t like it got a different pair of fives from stew Mac put them in now. It’s one Guitar of mine. That sounds different in every way I like it.

Imma be honest seeing the finish on the Gibson SG and the pickguard vs the pickguard on the Epiphone SG and Satin finish makes a big difference to me.

I have a 60’s std, a classic, a trad pro V and a tribute. If you forced me to pick one, I probably still couldn’t. My tribute is every bit as good of a guitar as my standard, in some ways it’s better. As a side note, anyone is more than welcome to give their thoughts on my guitars…douchebags are welcome to their opinion just like anyone else.

I have one from 1991. It came with the black speed knobs which I believe they used from the start. But swapped them with the gold top hat. looks much better. They changed the center block to maple right somewhere mid 90's?

The Classic is thinner. I prefer the 50s.

I have a LP Standard and it is 100% the only real LP……..that I own.

Get want you can afford and makes you happy. My level of playing doesn’t warrant a 3,000.00 LesPaul but a 1,000.00 yes all day. And they look and feel good. I’ve had an Epi Custom for over 20 years and it’s still my favorite

To me, the custom almost sounds like a tele, vs the normal sounds much fuller and darker. It has a very very nice twang to it, I’ve been looking at putting 57 style Gibson pickups in mine, I want it to sound as much like a single coil as possible, while still sounding like a humbucker if that makes any sense at all… I may just be driving myself crazy at this point😂 I just want the jangliest humbucker and I think the 57s are the ones to do it! Both of these samples sounded amazing, it’s hard to compare and pick a favorite when they both sound so good!
